She's got the beat

Jackie started a new music class with friends - at Recreational Music in Liberty Station.  It's a long drive, but such a reasonably priced class and with friends so we decided to do it.  So far so good!  We got there a bit late the first day as we struggled to figure out where it was, so Jackie ran in and grabbed her seat with her friends.

A few minutes in as the teacher began to direct some attention towards Jackie she got a little nervous and overwhelmed and needed me to come sit with her for a minute and comfort her.  But, it didn't take long for her to gain some confidence and start participating again.  She'd still check to make sure I was there nearby but I think she will get more and more comfortable each week.  They learned a song that they will sing at the start of class.  Then they learned about high notes and low notes; played with a xylophone and a magnetic board of sheet music, moving little magnets around the the highs and lows.  Since I had absolutely no music education, Jackie already learned something I didn't know.

Then they headed to another room where they got to play the drums!  Again, I know nothing, but I think they are digital drum sets.  It looks like a shrunk down drum set with all the parts in the same areas as a full size traditional set.  And the pads and discs make the drum or symbol sounds when you hit them with the sticks.  The kids loved it!!  You must watch the video below.  I was so envious and proud at the same time!  I think she has the very beginnings of a sense of rhythm.  I'm not saying she's a natural or a genius.  She's not getting a spot on the Ellen Show or anything.  But, I see an inkling of natural rhythm.... enough to be a dancer someday?
